portraiture
the longer i do photography, the more i am drawn to artistic portraiture. but this is the thing i’ve done the least. why? fear. it’s scary to ask someone if you can photograph them. it seems very personal. and it is very personal. and then to try and get the right look, the right pose. to find the right moment where something real comes through. these days, everyone is so protected; so conscious of what they are looking like in front of a camera. i think it’s changed with the accessibility of cameras, especially digital. it’s hard to let your guard down. it’s hard to get someone to let their guard down. let alone in front of a lens.
diane arbus was amazing at capturing emotion through a single look. through a straight forward pose and composition. i admire that.
